The safest day to drive

You can try to reduce your odds of getting into a car accident in many different ways. You can practice safe driving yourself, avoiding distractions and following traffic laws. You can practice defensive driving, watching for others to make mistakes so that you can react to them as quickly as possible.

But what if it was as simple as just choosing when you drive?

It may be. The data shows that Saturday night is the most dangerous time to be on the road. That's when the highest percentage of deadly accidents take place. You have a very dangerous combination of factors like reduced visibility, higher traffic levels and greater odds of encountering drunk drivers.

So, if you want to stay safe, when should you choose? The fewest accidents tend to happen early on Tuesday morning. The weekdays are consistently safer than the weekends in these early morning timeslots -- from 4 a.m. to 7:59 a.m. -- but they are decidedly lower on Tuesdays and then start slowly increasing to a high over the weekend.

In a very general sense, even the times after 8 a.m. tend to be a bit safer. You don't really see any spikes until you get past noon, perhaps due to the afternoon commute.

Of course, you cannot always choose when you drive. Plus, you can still get involved in a serious accident even during the safest hours on the road. It's clear that driving itself just carries a level of risk that you can't entirely avoid. If you get injured, you may have a right to financial compensation.
